Business English Certification
EnglishLegalese offers two separate, original professional English certification pathways based on demonstrated communication skills, with live, teacher-supervised testing and levels informed by international CEFR standards.
EnglishLegalese Business English Certification
EnglishLegalese offers a separate, EnglishLegalese-branded certification pathway for meetings, business email, presentations, management, workplace negotiation and financial or investor communications. It has its own assessments, results and certificate records. Scores in the other specialist track do not transfer or automatically establish a level.
Specialist levels and live-assessment formats
Separate track IDs: EL-BUS-A1 · EL-BUS-A2 · EL-BUS-B1 · EL-BUS-B2 · EL-BUS-C1 · EL-BUS-C2. These identify assessment pathways, not certificate serials or evidence of an award. Learners must complete teacher-supervised assessments before any credential can be issued.
| Level | Observable communication | Example supervised tasks |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | Handle basic introductions, schedules, numbers and routine workplace requests | Live introductions and an observed short workplace message |
| A2 | Manage simple instructions, meeting logistics and customer correspondence | Simulated calendar discussion and supervised confirmation email |
| B1 | Give project updates, summarize business information and participate in familiar meetings | Team-status roleplay, reading and written operational update |
| B2 | Explain options, lead structured discussions and present evidence-based proposals | Unseen workplace brief, live stakeholder roleplay and timed proposal |
| C1 | Handle complex negotiations, presentations and nuanced management communication | Executive presentation, challenging live questions and written analysis |
| C2 | Communicate flexibly and precisely in unfamiliar international business situations | Extended boardroom simulation, synthesis of complex documents and examiner questioning |
How candidates earn an EnglishLegalese certificate
- Choose this specialist track and request an assessment time; ordinary self-study scores do not qualify.
- Complete identity verification and live human-proctored speaking, listening, reading, written-production and interaction tasks using unseen, original prompts.
- Follow the examiner's authorized-tool rules. AI assistance, outside coaching and unapproved materials are prohibited during examination tasks; supervision reduces but cannot eliminate misconduct.
- Have two trained assessors moderate borderline results using recorded scoring rubrics, with a documented appeal and resit process.
- Following a verified supervised examination and approved scoring/issuer checks, EnglishLegalese issues a uniquely numbered, date-stamped credential naming the exact specialist track and level.
Status: No live certification exam booking, public credential verification or credential issuance is enabled yet. Training and classroom inquiries are available separately.
International reference: CEFR-informed, not CEFR-issued
EnglishLegalese proposes its own specialist A1–C2 level descriptions inspired by the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and its 2020 Companion volume. The CEFR provides general language-proficiency descriptors, not an externally awarded Legal English or Business English credential. A claimed CEFR level-equivalence would require careful standard-setting, validation, assessor training, empirical evidence and external review.
Official sources: Council of Europe CEFR framework and CEFR can-do descriptors.
Independence: An EnglishLegalese Business English certificate is an EnglishLegalese-issued credential, not one granted by the Council of Europe, Cambridge, TOEIC, TOLES or any professional licensing body. It assesses workplace language, not legal knowledge, authorization to practice law or professional competence beyond language.
Original Business English supervised assessment framework
Explore six increasingly demanding, subject-specific assessment task designs. These are exam blueprints, not live exams or earned credentials. Before any exam is booked or certification is awarded, EnglishLegalese must verify identity and consent, supervise unseen listening, speaking, reading and writing tasks with a human examiner, calibrate scoring, handle accommodations and appeals, and enable secure certificate verification.
A1 · A short workplace schedule and greeting
Live listening / speaking evidence: Find a meeting time in a fictional team invitation and politely introduce yourself.
Supervised reading / written evidence: Write a simple acknowledgement and correctly name two responsibilities.
Teacher assessment: Evaluate comprehension, task completion, accuracy, audience-appropriate register and independent response quality; record observed evidence rather than awarding automatic points.
A2 · A fictional customer service update
Live listening / speaking evidence: Listen to a delivery change and confirm the revised date in a short simulated call.
Supervised reading / written evidence: Draft a practical email with a status update, next step and courteous closing.
Teacher assessment: Evaluate comprehension, task completion, accuracy, audience-appropriate register and independent response quality; record observed evidence rather than awarding automatic points.
B1 · A fictional project status report
Live listening / speaking evidence: Explain an operational delay and ask a colleague for a clear action commitment.
Supervised reading / written evidence: Summarize key facts and draft a structured action-item message.
Teacher assessment: Evaluate comprehension, task completion, accuracy, audience-appropriate register and independent response quality; record observed evidence rather than awarding automatic points.
B2 · A fictional vendor proposal
Live listening / speaking evidence: Lead a simulated supplier meeting, ask probing questions and negotiate a timeline.
Supervised reading / written evidence: Compare two proposals and write a persuasive, accurately qualified recommendation.
Teacher assessment: Evaluate comprehension, task completion, accuracy, audience-appropriate register and independent response quality; record observed evidence rather than awarding automatic points.
C1 · A fictional quarterly investor briefing
Live listening / speaking evidence: Respond spontaneously to analyst follow-up questions about estimates and uncertainties.
Supervised reading / written evidence: Prepare an investor-ready executive summary distinguishing actuals from forecasts.
Teacher assessment: Evaluate comprehension, task completion, accuracy, audience-appropriate register and independent response quality; record observed evidence rather than awarding automatic points.
C2 · A simulated board-level strategic decision
Live listening / speaking evidence: Moderate a challenging cross-cultural board discussion, handling nuance and disagreement.
Supervised reading / written evidence: Synthesize conflicting market scenarios into a precise, balanced board briefing.
Teacher assessment: Evaluate comprehension, task completion, accuracy, audience-appropriate register and independent response quality; record observed evidence rather than awarding automatic points.
Evidence-based evaluation
Examiners will independently document communication clarity, comprehension, professional vocabulary and register, and accurate task completion across spoken and written evidence. Scores, pass thresholds and CEFR equivalence must undergo quality assurance and cannot be assumed from these sample scenarios.
